Interactive Program Teaches Participants about Foods to Prevent and Survive Cancer

Marietta–The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a national nonprofit organization that promotes preventive medicine, particularly good nutrition, and supports higher standards in research, is offering a cooking course designed to help local residents discover the diet patterns that have a major effect in helping cancer survivors to live longer, healthier lives.

“Everyone who is concerned about nutrition will benefit from this class - and enjoy it.” says Brian C. at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT, “For those of us challenged to survive cancer, it is a great inspiration!”

Many teams of researchers have been investigating how food choices can help prevent cancer and survival once it has been diagnosed. Numerous studies have shown that a diet built from plant foods offers the most cancer-fighting protection of any diet plan. This 4-class series will include a discussion on maintaining a healthy weight and will also cover a variety of cancer-related nutrition topics demonstrating how to prepare delicious, yet simple and healthy meals that can easily be recreated at home.

“The challenge”, Susan Levin, M.S., R.D., the director of nutrition education for PCRM, acknowledges, “is not only to teach people which foods are good for them, but also to show them how to make the foods taste good.”  Each class centers on important nutrition topics as local cooking instructor Sonali Sadequee guides students through the preparation of tasty and easy-to-prepare recipes.

The class details are as follows:

April 19th, 1-3 pm, Introduction to How Foods Fight Cancer
April 26th, 1-3 pm, Fueling Up On Low-Fat, High-Fiber Foods
May 3rd, 1-3 pm, Discovering Dairy and Meat Alternatives
May 10th, 1-3 pm, Cancer-Fighting Compounds and Healthy Weight Control
